Kavala-born director Dimitris Chatzimallis received an honorary distinction for ‘Best Documentary’ for the film “Wings of the Great War, at this year’s Athens Marathon International Film Festival.
Wings of the Great war is a documentary produced by Gullwing Productions. In addition to the movie, there is also the extensive version with a series of 5-episode documentaries that aired on Cosmote History and is part of Cosmote TV’s on-demand service library.
The documentary presents aspects of the history of the “Great War” unknown to the general public and details about the participation of the airports of Thassos, Drama, Xanthi, Lemnos, etc in the first world war battlefield.
Many participations in this year’s festival
This year’s Athens Marathon International Film Festival took place online due to the special circumstances created by the pandemic crisis of Covid-19. A total of 327 films were produced by directors and producers, of which 159 were selected and about half of them were screened online.
The film directed by Dimitris Chatzimallis, in addition to the Honorable Mention he received from the jury, had an excellent performance in the preferences of the public. According to the online poll, “Wings of Great War” was one of the most voted films, proving that documentaries can also have a commercial impact.
Dimitris Chatzimallis was born in Germany and grew up in Eleftheroupoli, Greece. He studied television and cinema in Thessaloniki, where he worked for several years.
He has collaborated with television stations of nationwide scope and with international satellite networks, in television productions and broadcasts but also in journalism. In recent years he has been working for television stations in Kavala and has participated in dozens of television productions and broadcasts, as a cameraman, editor and TV director. Among other things, he has directed speeches of political leaders while he also directed the final matches of the Greek LOL tournament (League of Legends).
